Alice Springs is located in the Northern Territory of Australia and the town is the second largest in Alice Springs is known as Mparntwe to the traditional inhabitants, who are the Arrernte, who have lived in the Central Australian desert in and around what is now Alice Springs for more than 50,000 years. Popularly known as the Alice or simply Alice. There are many festivals and events for example the Alice Springs Beanie Festival, Camel Cup, Henley on Todd Regatta and the Finke Desert Race. Other leisure activities include hiking in the MacDonnell Ranges driving the four-wheel drive tracks at Finke Gorge National Park and visiting art galleries in Todd Mall. However Alice Springs is most famous for being in close proximity to Ayers Rock which is one of Australia's best known landmarks and an important focus for Aboriginal culture. Alice Springs is also famous for it being the focus of Nevil Shute's novel 'A Town Like Alice'. As well as this a Japanese film called Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World used Alice Springs as its filming location and the famous television series, Star Trek Enterprise, used Alice Springs as the location of an astronaut survival training station
